By now we’ve got our static Index.html file built into our Wordpress Theme, we’ve setup our Custom Post Types and Fields, and we’re ready to bring that dynamic content to life on our front page.

In this part of the series on building a website with Wordpress from scratch, we’ll discuss how to display all the dynamic content you’ve created using custom fields and custom post types. The power of the content loop is to save repetition, with a few lines of code you’ll be able to display all your posts.

Permanent Custom Fields are the most powerful tool for building a true Content Management System with Wordpress. They allow us to create new content boxes on our posts pages.

In this part of the series on building a website with Wordpress from scratch, we’ll cover adding custom fields to your custom post types to allow your clients and users the ability to add content without breaking your design.

We’ll be adding Custom Fields that will show up automatically on all the Post Adoptions pages in the Wordpress Admin. Combining this with Custom Post Types give you unlimited possibilities when it comes to adding dynamic content. We use the exact same technique to add Portfolio posts on this site, List Products for sale on other sites and much much more!

Wordpress Custom Post Types are one of our favorite features, they are one of the main reasons we are able to build true Content Management Systems with Wordpress.

In this part of the series on building a website with Wordpress from scratch, we’ll be covering how to setup and use Custom Post Types within the Wordpress backend and in our theme.

Custom Post Types are exactly as the name implies, they allow us to add new dynamic content sections to our website besides the traditional blog posts. For example, on this site, we have a portfolio section which lists all our work from newest to oldest. To add new pieces we simply login to our backend and create new posts under the Portfolio Custom Post Type.

Because Wordpress was originally intended to be used for blogging, naturally the front page of the site would be your blog posts from newest to oldest.

In this part of the series on building a Wordpress website from scratch, we’ll be looking at assigning a different front page to our site to break free from the blog feel.

Of course we will want to display our blog or news section on another page later on, so we’ll keep that structure intact and save it for another page.

In this part of our series on building a Wordpress website from scratch, we’ll be looking at converting our static website into a theme that Wordpress can understand.

We’ll begin by adding some documentation to our CSS stylesheet so Wordpress can identify our theme and allow us to activate it in the backend. Then we’ll add necessary PHP functions and meta data to our Head to make sure all the Wordpress functionality gets included in our pages.

We’ll be breaking down the index.html file into 3 sections; the header, index and footer. This will allow us to create as many pages as we want later without redundancy.

Finally we’ll take a look at the file & folder structure necessary for Wordpress to identify our theme and use the right files.
